Guitry, Sacha

Guitry, Sacha
(1888-1957)
   actor, playwright, filmmaker
A leading figure of the French stage and screen, Sacha Guitry, who was born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was the son of the actor Lucien Guitry. He composed, between 1901 and 1935, more than 130 plays. A fashionable Parisian of the Belle Époque, he had charm, good taste, and a great sense of humor and wit. His works, which often deal with bourgeois adultery, include Faisons un rêve (1918), Mon Père avait raison (1919), Mot de Cambronne (1936), Quadrille (1937), and N'Écoutez pas, mesdame (1942). His work as a filmmaker is perhaps as rich as his plays. He produced historical works, such as Remontons les Champs-Elysées (1938), and especially Diable boiteux (1948), which deal with his favorite historical personage, charles-maurice de talleyrand. Guitry was elected to the Académie Goncourt in 1939 but resigned in 1948.
